THE PRESURFER - ABANDONED SUITCASES REVEAL PRIVATE LIVES OF INSANE ASYLUM PATIENTS.

This move came just before the recording and release of Homesick for Heaven, which is presently available only in Europe on Coyote Records. She has also released {{Lookin Back}} on her original label, Maranatha Records. This is a transfixing and deeply sad book, and its genesis is breathtaking: the discovery of hundreds of suitcases in an attic of the abandoned Willard State Hospital in New York, and taken to the New York State Museum. Lawrence, one of the suitcase cases (ha) seems to have been an untreated alcoholic. In the mid-90s, I heard that at Willard-one of the asylums in which I spent a lot of time photographing-the employees had saved all the patient suitcases that belonged to people who came to Willard and d there. The show features the suitcases and possessions of 12 former Willard patients, including the four individuals whose photos and stories appear on these pages. Albany, New York- Craig Williams, a curator at the New York State Museum, drove four hours to visit Willard Psychiatric Center in the spring of 1995.

When Willard Psychiatric Center closed in 1995, staff members Beverly Courtwright and Lisa Hoffman, along with Craig Williams, a New York State Museum curator, worked to save historical artifacts there. Beverly found a door tucked under the pigeon-infested rafters of an attic. These fascinating images show abandoned suitcases which belonged to patients who were residents of the Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane between the 1910s and early 1960s. The Lives They Left Behind, talks all about the Willard State Hospital that used to house mental patients up until about 1980. In the suitcases were the belongings of patients housed at Willard over the past century. In 1995, during the closure of the Willard Psychiatric Center in New Yorks Finger Lakes region, several hundred suitcases filled with the personal belongings of former patients were discovered in the hospital attic. He designed the famous suitcase amplifier which facilitated calibrated measurements of underwater sound. These portable, broadband, high-gain amplifiers had very low microphonics and were used for a wide variety of pioneering sound transmission measurements at several research facilities.
